The Old Mission School community works cooperatively to achieve an innovative and disciplined school environment. While emphasizing success with our core curricula, OMS encourages students to discover the world around, appreciate diversity of all life, and strive to be of service to others.

The Old Mission School Schoolwide Learning Expectations (SLE’s) provide the foundation for student learning at each grade level, K-8. Using the California Common Core State Standards for Language Arts and Mathematics as well as the Next Generation Science Standards as a measure for academic success, the SLE’s are woven throughout daily lessons with the purpose of developing character, compassion, and confidence in all Old Mission School students. OMS believes a strong academic program and high standards support and strengthen character.

Old Mission School understands the use of technology (K-8) is instrumental to engage students in lessons that support and enrich the grade level curriculums. Each OMS middle school student (6-8) is issued a Chromebook to use at school and home. In grades K-5 three Chromebook carts are shared among classes and the school’s upgraded computer lab is used on a regular basis. Time on task along with high student engagement is expected and monitored to assure students will accomplish their daily learning objectives.

In addition to core academic classes, our K-8 programs include weekly classes in the following disciplines:

• Physical Education
• Music classes emphasize movement, rhythm, and vocal performance
• Art classes introduce students to a variety of design, mediums, and art expressions
• Spanish instruction
• Elective classes are offered for students in grades 7 and 8

Parents and guardians stay informed of student progress through parent conferences, report cards, progress reports, Star assessment results, and our online student information system. The philosophy of OMS stems from the belief that parents are the primary educators of their children. Teachers, staff, students, and parents work together to ensure student progress toward learning standards and the SLE’s. As the students obtain an increased awareness of the world’s diversity and needs of others, they are encouraged to respond appropriately based on Catholic social justice teachings.

Elective Activities

In addition to academic excellence in the core academic areas, Old Mission Schools offers middle school students a variety of enrichment activities designed to expand horizons and provide a well-rounded learning experience. Students may select from the following enrichment classes:

Yoga Physical Fitness History Analysis including an in-depth study of the Civil War Mock Trial Yearbook Principles of Drawing

Music Math Enrichment Study Skills Cooking Classes Art classes using a variety of mediums Musical Theatre
